What is website hosting and why do I need it?
Website hosting is a service that allows you to publish your website on the internet. Here’s a simple breakdown of how it works:
- Server Space: When you purchase a hosting plan, you’re essentially renting space on a server where your website’s files (like HTML, CSS, images, etc.) are stored.
- Accessibility: This server makes your website accessible to anyone with an internet connection. When someone types your domain name into their browser, the server delivers your website’s content.
- Maintenance and Security: Hosting providers manage server maintenance, security, and software updates to ensure your website runs smoothly.

What is ADA and what does it mean for my website?
ADA compliance for a website means ensuring that your website is accessible to people with disabilities, which aligns with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Here are the key points:
- Meaningful Access: Your website should provide meaningful access to all users, including those with disabilities. This involves making sure that all content and functionalities are accessible.
- WCAG Standards: The best ADA compliance practice is following the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 AA. These guidelines cover many recommendations for making web content more accessible.
- Legal Requirements: Non-compliance can lead to legal consequences, including fines and lawsuits. Ensuring your website meets ADA standards helps you avoid these issues.
- Inclusive Design: This includes features like text alternatives for images, keyboard navigability, screen reader compatibility, and sufficient color contrast.
- Continuous Process: Achieving and maintaining ADA compliance is an ongoing process that involves regular updates and testing to ensure accessibility standards are met.

What is a domain and why do I need one?
A domain name is a unique, easy-to-remember address used to access websites. Here’s a simple breakdown:
- A domain name is a text a user types into a browser to reach a specific website, like google.com or facebook.com.
- Structure: It typically consists of two main parts: Second-Level Domain (SLD): This is the central part of the domain name, like google in google.com and Top-Level Domain (TLD): This is the suffix at the end, like .com, .org, or .net.
- Function: Domain names map to numerical IP addresses, the actual addresses of websites on the internet. The Domain Name System (DNS) translates these numerical addresses into the user-friendly domain names we use.
- Importance: They make it easier for people to remember and access websites without remembering complex numerical IP addresses.

How do I choose a domain for my website?
With all of the modern options for domain names, I always suggest my clients keep their domain names as short as possible while incorporating their business name or primary service. You want it to be easily remembered and quickly typed into a browser. People on the internet want things short and sweet and to the point.
