Halloween, celebrated on October 31st, is a holiday with both ancient and modern traditions. Its origins trace back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, where people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts. The Celts believed that on this night, the boundary between the living and the dead became blurred, allowing spirits to return to Earth.
In the 8th century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1st as All Saints’ Day, incorporating some of the Samhain traditions into the evening before, which became known as All Hallows’ Eve, and eventually, Halloween.
No matter how it came to be, Halloween is fun and has always been my favorite holiday. Please take look at my office and come celebrate Halloween in downtown Richmond Maine on October 31st!
